»TH1/TH2 Cytokine Fingerprinting for Probing Diseases:
Posted on 16/July/2008
ABSTRACT - Cytokines play crucial roles in all aspects of health and iseases. They influence immune expression, the development of immunologic memory, and regulation of antigen-specific and nonspecific immune ctivation. Based on their production by Thelper (TH) cells, cytokines are categorized into TH1 and TH2 types. TH1 type includes inflammatory cytokines and growth factors. The former induces signal three that bridge innate and adaptive immunity, whilst the latter sustains proliferation and survival of T cells. Therefore, TH1 cytokines profoundly mediate generation of preventive immune responses toward infectious diseases and cancer. By contrast, TH2 cytokines are anti-inflammatory through suppression of TH1-mediated immune responses, but they also accelerate TH2-mediated diseases. This article describes the impact
of the TH1/TH2 cytokines on shaping the nature of the immune cell responses to inflammation, infection, and cancer. We predict that TH1/TH2 could be considered as a fingerprint for probing the identity of diseases.Fundamental knowledge of the design of cytokinebased therapeutic strategies is now reaching the phase of application and a number of cytokines are already
on the market and many others are under clinical investigation.

»Catheter Ablation for Atrial Fibrillation: An Update
Posted on 16/July/2008
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common and increasingly prevalent arrhythmia associated with a significant burden on morbidity, mortality and healthcare expenditure. Catheter ablation for AF has evolved into a viable therapeutic ption in select patients with symptomatic AF.

»Management of Febrile Neutropenia
Posted on 16/July/2008
The significant successes in hematological cancer chemotherapy in the last 40 years have been tempered through the ‘innocent casualty’ phenomenon of creating a highly immunocompromised milieu fruitful for opportunistic infections, whose morbidity and mortality threaten outcome.1 Bodey is credited with the first clear documentation of the link between infection and neutropenia.2 He observed that the mortality of most patients who had infection and neutropenia was 90%.

»Molecular and Cellular Aspects of Plasticity after
Posted on 16/July/2008
This review focuses on our effort to address
plasticity of the nervous system after neural injury. We have used different animal models to examine cellular mechanisms of plasticity underlying the pathological and repair processes. After severance of sensory input from one inner ear, topographic representations of spacecentered coordinates in the brain undergo plastic changes. During vestibular compensation, tissue
plasticity constitutes an important component for functional recovery of neuronal network. In Parkinsonian animals, modulation of signaling via glutamatergic synapses, neurotrophins and neurokinins contributes to the protection of basal ganglion neurons from degeneration, thereby
delaying deterioration of motor functions. With the use of animal models of neural injury, we further

»Senile Osteoporosis: Does it Really Exist?
Posted on 16/July/2008
Osteoporosis currently affects approximately 1 in 4 women and 1 in 8 men in North America and will increase in incidence over the next 20 years
as baby boomers enter their 6th and 7th decades.1 The public health and clinical importance of osteoporosis lies in fractures associated with the
disease which occurs primarily in patients 65 years and older.
